Catalonia is one of the autonomous communities in Spain, with a status of nationality. With the population of 7.5 million people and Barcelona as the capital, Catalonia has four official languages: Catalan, Spanish, Aranese and Catalan Sign language. Located on the Iberian Peninsula, with its Mediterranean shores, the region is the home of Salvador Dalí, Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, Pau Gasol – LA Lakers basketball player, Facundo Bacardi – the founder of Bacardi rum distillery, and FC Barcelona. As a part of the Romance language family, Catalan gives parents all over the world the chance to choose a child’s name of royal ancestry, linguistically unique, and with etymology surprisingly more similar to French or Italian than Spanish itself.
