Baseball pro Nick Swisher, 32, and his actress-wife JoAnna Garcia-Swisher, 33, welcomed their first baby, a daughter, on May 21st, reported People magazine. Her name? Emerson Jay Swisher.
Technically a boy’s name, we began seeing unisex adaptations back around 1997, when Desperate Housewives’ Teri Hatcher named her daughter Emerson. Of Old English origin, Emerson was originally an Old English surname meaning son of Emery. The name may also bring to mind the beloved American essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Garcia, who has played roles in Reba on The CW, Better With You on ABC and Animal Practice on NBC, began dating the hunky slugger in 2009 and married him the following year, in 2010, in Palm Beach, Florida.
Swisher began his paternity leave on May 21, reported the Associated Press.
The new precious bundle is sure to receive a whole lotta love.
The new father told Yahoo!, in anticipation of his daughter’s arrival, “I’ve got a beautiful wife, she’s my best friend, I’ve got a great job and a beautiful home, and now it’s time to be a dad…I want her to be exactly like my wife.”
That’s hands-down the most adorable dad-to-be quote we’ve encountered in a while. Props to Swisher who’s not too cool a man to appreciate all the good going on in his life.
This is Swisher’s first season playing ball as a Cleveland Indian. He’s previously sported jerseys for the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox.
New Mom Garcia kept the love vibe alive, posting to her 99,000-plus Twitter followers on May 27, “Since the arrival of baby Emerson, @NickSwisher & I have been so filled w love, joy, & gratitude.”
Here’s hoping Baby Emerson will heed the tender advice of the poet sharing her name, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and “hitch her wagon to the stars.”
